Laser hair removal myths – busted!

Are you considering laser hair removal but have a thousand questions about it first? Stop right there. We hear you and we’re HERE for you! As United Kingdom’s largest network of laser hair removal clinics, we’ve got all your questions answered and all those laser hair removal myths, busted.

Let’s set the scene. You’re sick of waxing and shaving. You hate the whole routine. You hate the ingrown hairs and most of all you hate the time it takes to shave or wax. We totally get it which is why laser takes the hassle out of everything to do with hair removal so that you can be ready at a moment’s notice. That last-minute trip to the beach? No worries. Unexpected date night? We’ve got you.

It’s perfectly normal to be curious about the laser hair removal process and there’s a lot of mixed messages out there about how laser works, how soon you can see laser results and answering questions like, ‘does laser hurt?’

Let’s get myth-busting.

MYTH 1: LASER IS ONLY FOR WOMEN.

Oh em gee! Your brother, best mate, father, cousin, boyfriend is more than likely already doing laser or at the least, they’re toying with the idea. I mean who can blame them? Laser for men can seriously help with ingrown hairs and it can help the guys who are worried/self-conscious/sick of the amount of body hair they have. And here’s something the blokes aren’t fully aware of… laser hair removal can also be used as hair reduction. GUYS. Laser doesn’t immediately get rid of all hair. You need multiple sessions to reduce hair growth. Therefore, you can control how much hair you wish to reduce by controlling the number of sessions you go in for. E.g.: undertaking 3-5 sessions instead of the recommended 10 sessions. You’re welcome, bro.

MYTH 2: LASER HAIR REMOVAL IS EXPENSIVE.

It’s never been more affordable or easier to begin laser with hair removal, prices start from just £5. Yep – the same price as your morning coffee and a slice of banana bread.

Also, we compared the price of laser to waxing and shaving, and you’d be surprised to know that if you opted for laser hair removal, over 5 years you’d save £866 and over 20 years? £ 4266. Check it out via our video below.

MYTH 3: LASER HAIR REMOVAL IS PAINFUL.

Laser hair removal is no more painful than waxing. In fact, some clients actually say waxing is more painful as it pulls at the skin and can result in ingrown hairs. Clients often liken laser hair removal to ‘quick flicking of an elastic band’. More than ever, we have first-timers leaving our clinics saying, ‘why didn’t I start this sooner?!’

MYTH 4: ALL LASER HAIR REMOVAL IS THE SAME.

Nah-uh sisters and misters! We’re not going to lie, there are a tonne of providers out there. But there’s a reason why we are a market leader and that’s because we use the best of the best technology out there. Our experienced therapists use medical grade Candela GentleLase Pro and GentleYag Pro, the world’s most efficient hair reduction system. For smooth, ready to go skin all year round.

MYTH 5: LASER HAIR REMOVAL EXPOSES YOU TO RADIATION.

Oh, hell no! While there is radiation in between the light barriers of the laser, it does not exit that space and is in no way harmful to the recipient of laser hair removal.

MYTH 6: YOU CAN WAX RIGHT BEFORE YOUR LASER TREATMENTS.

The laser needs to identify pigment to locate and target the hair follicle. Waxing removes the hair and pigment entirely and so we’d zap away at nothing. For this reason, do not wax or pluck hairs 4 weeks prior to laser treatment. Shaving between treatments is the way to go as beneath the skin, there is still hair present which = pigment which = effective laser hair removal treatment.

MYTH 7: YOU CAN GET LASER WHILE WEARING FAKE TAN.

Fake tan is a big no-no during laser hair removal treatment. Fake tan increases pigment in the skin and can really confuse the machine. It also puts you at risk of ineffective and painful laser hair removal. Which is why we simply refuse to treat clients who have fake tan present on the area to be treated with laser hair removal. You might think that’s harsh, but your safety is extremely important to us and we just won’t risk that.

MYTH 8: I CAN’T GET LASER HAIR REMOVAL WHILE PREGNANT OR BREASTFEEDING.

While laser hair removal is unsuitable during the first trimester of pregnancy, you can continue with your treatment during the second and third trimesters provided you have obtained mandatory medical clearance prior to proceeding. This is to ensure no unrelated complications occur during the treatment.

MYTH 9: LASER HAIR REMOVAL WORKS THE SAME FOR EVERYONE.

Results vary by hair colour, skin type and person. Red hair is more difficult (though not impossible) to remove. White and grey hair cannot be removed with laser treatment as it lacks that all-important pigment that the laser is attracted to.

Depending on your hair and skin type and the area being treated, you will usually require treatments at 4-6 week intervals. Each part of the body has a different hair growth cycle, so the hair loss will vary depending on what phase your follicles are in at the time of treatment. However, at least 10 treatments are required for optimum results.
